Iran’s ‘Careless Crime’ to go to Rotterdam filmfest

The International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) in the Netherlands has scheduled to screen Iranian movie ‘Careless Crime’.

Directed by Shahram Mokri, the 135-minute movie will compete at the Cinema Regained section of the 50th edition of the Dutch event.

‘Careless Crime’ was internationally premiered at the Orizzonti section of the 77th Venice Film Festival in Italy.

Going back to forty years ago, the movie’s story starts during the uprising to overthrow the Shah’s regime in Iran.

Then, protestors set fire to movie theaters as a way of showing opposition to Western culture and burned down many cinemas.

In one tragic case, a theater was set on fire with four hundred people inside and most of them were burned alive.

Now in contemporary Iran, after forty years, four individuals also decide to burn down a movie theater.

Produced by Negar Eskanadarfar and Karnameh Institute of Arts and Culture, the flick is starring Babak Karimi, Razieh Mansouri, and Abolfazl Kahani.

Set to vie at the Jeonju International Film Festival in South Korea and the MOOOV International Film Festival in Belgium, ‘Careless Crime’ has already gone on screen at several global events and won some awards, including the Best Original Screenplay award at the Venice International Film Festival in Italy, the best screenplay award at the Dhaka International Film Festival in Bangladesh, and the Hong Kong International Film Festival.

The IFFR is one of the largest public film events in the world. The festival actively supports independent filmmaking from around the globe and is a recognized platform in Europe for launching new films and talents.

The second phase of the 50th IFFR is slated for June 2-6, 2021. Its first phase was held in a hybrid mode on February 1-7.
